Busted! Don’t Believe These Myths About Flooring Maintenance!

For example, many people think that hardwood flooring is hard to maintain or that laminate flooring gives a cheap look. Such myths are often false or based on faulty logic.

Myth 1: Cleaning floors with vinegar and water is fine.

A lot of people clean their floors with vinegar and water. However, this is the wrong approach. Vinegar is an acid and will strip the finish from your flooring. If used on solid or engineered hardwood, the water over time will seep into the wood and cause cupping and cracking.

Myth 2: Engineered hardwood is more durable than solid hardwood.

This is a common misbelief. The finish on the engineered hardwood is the same finish as solid wood. Either of these products can be scratched or dented.

Myth 3: Floor steamers are a good idea.

TV ads show floor steamers used on hardwood and vinyl products and portray them in good light. Unfortunately, this again will remove the finish on the flooring and discolor products.

Heat with steamers is also an issue. If used on specific vinyl products, the glue could get re-activated with the heat and become loose.
